Lady Gertrude meets Snuffles
Lady Gertrude spluttered and wiped the dust from her face.
She could just make out a small, sinister figure walking out of the smoke towards her.
Who on earth was it? For the first time in her life, she felt a bit nervous. The figure stopped. It was a very odd shape.
Lady Gertrude and the mysterious shadow stood very still and observed each other.
Then Lady Gertrude remembered her manners.
‘WHO THE BLOOMING HECK ARE YOU, YOU BLITHERING IDIOT?! WHAT ON EARTH DO YOU THINK YOU ARE UP TO?’ she yelled.
Shouting always helped to improve her temper, and it also gave her courage. She marched forward into the smoke to confront whatever it was.
The creature (for it definitely was a creature) cleared its throat and spoke.
‘Squeak,’ it said.
‘How do you do?’ said the figure politely.
‘THAT’S NOT WHAT YOU SAID!’
‘No, you’re right. I wasn’t really saying anything. Just clearing my throat. Anyway, I think it’s entirely reasonable to say squeak if you are a mouse. Don’t you?’
And Snuffles (for it was he), walked out of the smoke, and before Lady Gertrude had time to react, he shook her by the hand.
‘So nice to make your acquaintance.’
It is fair to say that Lady Gertrude was flabbergasted.
